Ngā tuhinga kua whakaputaina 12/8/2025

The Waitangi Tribunal, in partnership with Te Herenga Waka, has launched the official website for 'Ko te Tōrino: Haere Whakamua, Haere Whakamuri - 50 Years of the Waitangi Tribunal', taking place on Thursday 9 - Friday 10 October 2025.

This conference will mark 50 years since the Tribunal’s establishment. It will bring together practitioners, scholars, and Māori communities to reflect on its work, consider its role in addressing contemporary and future claims, and examine how its model compares with international approaches to hearing indigenous peoples’ claims.

Topics will include lessons from the past, the role of the Tribunal in recording the history of Aotearoa New Zealand, developments in the hearing of claims, and the ways in which emerging issues may shape the Tribunal’s future. The programme will present a range of perspectives designed to inform discussion and promote understanding of the Tribunal’s contribution over the last 50 years.

Registrations for the conference as well as the 50th anniversary conference gala dinner are now open through the conference website.
