Concerning: Māori healthcare in the Bay of Islands and the Crown’s obligations under international law. The claimant alleges that the Crown has breached the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi by failing to: • Ensure it meets its international obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights 1966, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights 1966, and the Convention the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2006 (together known as the “International Bill of Human Rights”) within a New Zealand context; • Provide adequate resources and funding to district health boards (DHBs), thereby impeding access to and provision of healthcare services for Northland Māori; and • Adequately consult and meaningfully engage with Māori when designing and implementing its healthcare policies

Concerning: The claim concerns the failure of the Crown to provide for the healthcare of Māori in respect of the disproportionate number of Māori committing suicide and self-harm while in New Zealand prison and police custody. The claimant alleges that the Crown has breached the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi by failing to look after Māori placed in the Crown’s care, including prison and police custody, and ensure that those Māori receive all the care and rehabilitation that they require including spiritual, cultural and mental health care.
