David Williams, Mātauranga Māori and Taonga. The Nature and Extent of Treaty Rights Held by Iwi and Hapū  in Indigenous Flora and Fauna Cultural Heritage Objects and valued Traditional Knowledge, 1997.

Commissioned by the claimants in the lead-up to the first hearing, this report (by legal scholar, and now Professor, D. Williams) provides an overview of the Wai 262 claim, and topics such as traditional ecological knowledge and ethnobotany, international and New Zealand law on intellectual property and conservation, concepts of matauranga Maori, kaitiakitanga and Western traditions regarding the environment and property.
